Pretty 3D effect in blue and from the Quilpie mining district in western Queensland comes this pipe opal in natural sandstone.
Pipe opal occurs when fragments of tree roots or any organic material are trapped in sediments on an opal level and in time some of resulting cavaties are replaced by potch or precious opal. The sandstone has been stabilised with a polymer resin to increase strength and durability and then polished to a high finish. (Not a doublet). It has a 2.5mm hole drilled through from front to back and placed on a 2mm bronze leather cord to an adjustable length of 72cm.
Picture 3 is of the back of the pendant.
Stone size: 38mm x 23mm x 5.5mm
